Typically, when we think about celebrating a special occasion, we consider hosting a big party with many guests or a fancy dinner at an upscale restaurant. However, not every occasion needs so much hoopla. Does that mean those smaller, yet still noteworthy occasions should go without being celebrated? Of course, not! Below are a few simplistic ideas for celebrating those smaller moments in life with your kids and/or significant other:
Create a Taco Salad Bar – complete with all the toppings (Sour cream, shredded cheese, salsa, lettuce, black olives). It’s less expensive than eating out at the local Mexican Restaurant.
Create a Five-Star Restaurant Ambience in your own dining room – Use silver candelabras as lighting or your favorite scented candle and anchor the table with a vase of fresh flowers. As for food? Prepare a home cook meal or order “take-out” from your favorite restaurant and plate it on your good China.
Create a Personalized Gift Basket – Fill it with items he/she loves. For kids: playing cards, small toys, favorite snacks, and lip gloss. For adults: gift cards, a favorite bottle of wine, candles, cologne and personalized coupons for future use such as “1 free foot massage.”
Write a Poem – Who doesn’t love poetry? Create a personalized poem about the person you’re celebrating (It doesn’t have to be romantic. Humor works well, too!
Create a New Tradition – For example, during the holidays, if you live in a different state from your family – create your own activities and set your own food menu. And, who said turkey and dressing must be served each holiday. Your menu doesn’t have to include “traditional” holiday food. Why not prepare an Italian feast during Christmas or opt for an all veggie feast instead? Be sure to invite other friends (who are away from family, as well) to celebrate with you. By creating your own tradition the celebration becomes all the more “special” and creates anticipation each year!!
