Moving into a new home is an exciting time. New Start. New Neighbors. New Memories. BUT let’s admit it boxing up a lifetime of memories and relocating to another home is tedious, stressful and downright dreadful!! There’s so much more involved than simply packing your belongings into boxes and transporting the items on a truck to a new home. However, there is a way to streamline the packing process. And learn to “Celebrate” this time of transition.
1. DONATE – Of course everyone has a thrift store (i.e. Goodwill) nearby. Go through your personal belongings and determine which items have outgrown its purpose to you and your family and donate to a local thrift store and/or charity. Keep in mind, one man’s junk is another mans treasure. And your donation is tax deductible.
2. SELL – Advertise unwanted furniture, clothes, bikes, misc items on popular sites such as Craigslist. Be sure to describe details about each item and include clear colorful pictures to peak interest. The proceeds earned from the sales can be used to offset the moving costs. Making a few bucks is always a great option!
3. BE CREATIVE – If you are sentimental and tend to hold on to “treasured” items – allow your creative juices to flow. Give the keepsake item(s) a new purpose and convert into something decorative for the home. Consider having a quilt, lamp shade or throw pillow made from a favorite article of clothing from a loved one that has passed away. Or refurbish a piece of furniture (Example: Grandma’s old rocking chair) and add a throw pillow or cushion to coordinate with your home decor style.
4. HOST A “SWAP” PARTY – Finally, host a Swap Block Party in your apartment complex and/or subdivision. Encourage neighbors to bring items they no longer want to swap with other neighbors and vice versa. Not only does hosting a “Swap Party” allow you to rid of unwanted items but it gives you an opportunity to visit with neighbors before relocating to your new home. Cherish and celebrate these memories while looking forward to creating new memories in your new home!!
